Saturday September 7, 2019 – Acrylic Fun with Lance Green

Picture
Lance Green is a Colorist and an Expressionist, a Storyteller that conjures images that take the viewer beyond the mere likeness of a subject into the secret soul that lies hidden beneath. The greater part of his works are self-portraits of sorts, but all are universal in their application, expressing the human paradox of grace and despair in a way that somehow speaks invocations for the subject and viewer in hopes of resolving the work with a sound conviction in an ultimate redemption in all things.

At the beginning of the workshop Lance wants each student to write down exactly what they would like to focus on, be it color mixing, composition, how to paint a particular subject. Everyone has things they struggle with and things they love to do in a painting. Let’s work on whatever it is we need in the area of acrylic painting.

Materials:  Bring your acrylic art supplies, water container, apron, etc. and 2 canvases in the 24x36, 30x40, 36x48 range. Lance will provide 3x5 cards and will spend the first ten minutes having attendees write out what they want to work on.

Registration: Register on-line at www.heritage-guild.com and select Current Workshops.

Cost: The cost is $35 for ALL Heritage Fine Arts Guild members, $50 for non-members. Membership is only $40 and sign-up forms are at http://heritage-guild.com/membership.html.

Location: The workshop is scheduled for Saturday September 7, 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 1609 W. Littleton Blvd. at the northwest corner of Littleton Boulevard and Windermere Street. Breakfast coffee and treats will be provided. Please feel free to bring treats to share.

Saturday May 4, 2019 Intuitive Painting Workshop with Victoria Kwasinski

Picture
The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County presents another in a series of one-day workshops led by popular Denver artist and teacher Victoria Kwasinski.

Victoria asks the question,” Remember when you were a child, and you were lying in the grass and found stories and shapes in the clouds?”  We will explore finding shapes, themes, stories from initial washes of color and mark making; then, using our intuition we will develop these ideas into a great painting. This workshop is for artists of all levels and all mediums.

Kwasinski holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design where she graduated class valedictorian.  She has over 30 years of experience as a professional artist and has worked as a corporate graphic artist, freelance illustrator, gallery owner, fine artist and art instructor.

Victoria considers herself an ‘interpretive abstract’ artist.  Her goal is to create an abstracted visual interpretation of a thought, feeling or idea through the interplay of color and form that is often interwoven and connected with line.

Ms. Kwasinski has been teaching drawing and painting extensively throughout the Denver Metropolitan area since 1996.  She has taught workshops and extended class sessions, served as an exhibit juror, and has held critiques and demonstrations for various arts associations including, but not limited to:  The Colorado Watercolor Society, The Colorado Pastel Society, Foothills Art Center, Heritage Fine Arts Guild, Denver Allied Artists Guild, Aurora Artists Guild, Broomfield Art Guild, Park Hill Art Club, Business of Art Center, and other public and private associations.

Victoria works in a variety of art mediums, and the versatility of her work serves a varied audience.  She is a published illustrator, and her fine art is represented by galleries, shown in local and national juried exhibitions, and is collected internationally including collections of: The National Institute of Art/Taipei, Taiwan; The National Museum of Brazil/MUBE; His Holiness Cealo/Japan; Dr. Arun Gandhi; musician Nawang Khechog, and numerous private collections.  She has contributed art works or services to groups including; The Mask Project, The Global Art Project, Project Safeguard, Art that Heals, and The Alzheimer’s Association.

Of her lifetime journey as an Artist, Victoria states, “Art is my passion and my joy!  I believe that we are here to live our purpose as defined by what we are passionate about, that which makes our heart sing.

April 25 and 26 – Watercolor Painting with Energy and Freedom with Artist Steve Griggs

Picture
The Heritage Fine Arts Guild presents another in its series of fine art workshops. Watercolorist Steve Griggs will invite participants to explore a variety of watercolor painting strategies and techniques with the goal of becoming totally loose and free. Short warm-up sketches will precede finished landscapes, cityscapes and/or waterscape paintings. Steve’s keen sense of humor is sure to invoke lots of laughter and camaraderie as students move out of their comfort zones.

Steve's love of art started early in life. While other children would lament field trips to the art museum, that was his favorite day of the school year! Steve's mother bought his first 'real' watercolor set of six tubes of paint, when he was in elementary school and his love of watercolor was born. Growing up in a large family made finding time and space for painting difficult. Whenever possible Steve would steal away to the basement of his childhood home where he would paint but never show anyone what he had done.

Steve remained a 'closet artist' until he attended Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Studio Art. Steve later attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and studied Industrial Design. It wasn't until 2005 that Steve began to paint professionally, showing his paintings in galleries and juried art exhibitions. He currently has signature membership with Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society and Colorado Watercolor Society.

Steve's earliest influences and inspirations came from the Great Lakes region where he grew up. Throughout his lifetime he has been enamored of boats. Sailing vessels, lake freighters, military frigates; any type of boat has captured his imagination. Although Steve has resided in Colorado for many years, his paintings often reflect his love of the Great Lakes, fostered by frequent trips to his hometown near Detroit, Northern Michigan, and Wisconsin.

In addition to boats, Steve also paints landscapes and cityscapes. Steve frequently displays and sells work in local, state, regional, national, and international exhibitions and galleries. He offers workshops, demonstrations, and salons, as well as individual and small group painting lessons to help other artists understand and learn his unique style. Steve's students range from the very inexperienced artist to the professional painter. His paintings can be found on Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram.

Steve is currently represented by Mirada Fine Art Gallery in Indian Hills, Colorado. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Watercolor Society and continues his early love of art.

Saturday, April 6, 2019 – The Versatility of Painting with Acrylics with Christa MacFarlane

Picture
LITTLETON, CO. The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County will host a fine art workshop led by Christa MacFarlane. MaFarlane is a professional artist and art instructor who uses different acrylic painting techniques on paper and wood. She calls these techniques “Loose and Drippy and Brave and Intuitive.” This workshop is for all skill levels and will encourage students to loosen up and become more expressive. It’s all about having fun while trying techniques like scraping, dripping and stamping.

MacFarlane says, “Observing nature throughout the fields and trails of Colorado provides inspiration for my paintings and “hits close to home —where I live and who I am. Native Colorado plants often represent a message or story reflecting my life, my philosophy on life or a snapshot of life itself. Adding symbolism and recognition to otherwise overlooked parts of nature intrigues me. Although the subject matter that I paint is often made up of the ordinary, it certainly challenges me to find a deeper meaning and this is what drives me to make a statement. My attraction to the loose and fluid nature of acrylics on raw wood makes sense as it relates to my expressive and explorative nature.”

Christa MacFarlane is attracted to the loose and fluid nature of acrylics on raw wood, as she paints native grasses, seeds, pods and weeds along with other unnoticed elements of nature. When she stops to admire these underappreciated Colorado gems, her medium and subject matter makes sense to her. She is reminded of her childhood memories—running through the wide-open spaces of Kansas cattle fields blanketed in flowing wild grasses. While listening to the whistling chorus of crickets cutting through the summer breeze, she would often pause to release the seeds of a dandelion or to feel the fluidity of the cool stream water rushing through her fingers. These experiences provided her with the freedom and opportunity to dream, explore and nurture her creativity—much like the process of her painting today. MacFarlane’s strong illustrative skills, honed from a young age, aren’t necessarily revealed in her current work. Instead, she chooses to loosely depict her subject matter in her contemporary botanical paintings.

Once she obtained her BFA degree, MacFarlane established over twenty-five years combined experience as an interior designer, graphic artist and art instructor. Eventually she yearned to take time for personal creative reflection. While on a sabbatical in Europe she will never forget the emotional and spiritual impact of some of the greatest masters’ works. It was then that she resolved to transition into a career as a professional artist. This time period of travel and experimenting gave way to new expressive qualities in her artwork.

Pre-registration is required for the workshop and artists aged 18 years and older may attend. A registration form is available at (http://heritage-guild.com/current-workshops.html). For a list of supplies go to heritage-guild.com and select Current Workshops.

The workshop is scheduled for April 6 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm (doors unlocked at 8:30 am) at First Presbyterian Church, 1609 W. Littleton Blvd. in Littleton, at the northwest corner of Littleton Boulevard and Windermere Street.

Support is provided by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) serving the seven-county Denver metropolitan area. Cost is $30 for Heritage Fine Arts Guild members, $50 for non-members. Membership is only $40 and sign-up forms are at (http://heritage-guild.com/membership.html)

March 8 and 9, 2019 — Figure Workshop with Watercolorist Don Andrews

Picture
The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County announces a two-day workshop led by internationally recognized watercolorist and teacher Don Andrews.

Addressing the figure with the same artistic freedom and looseness as other subjects in nature is the central theme of Don’s figure class.

Throughout the workshop Andrews will stress that successful figure painting is more than a visual experience of mere anatomical parts; it is an exploration of color, design and paint quality as well.

Don’s figure classes are geared to intermediate and advanced painters who are looking for a challenge. Daily demonstrations will excite and stimulate those artists who are eager to stretch beyond the usual answers and discover a new looseness and expressive paint quality in their work. Beyond all that, Andrews believes that painting with watercolor should be fun!

As a graduate of Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, Don Andrews is an active member and past board director of the American Watercolor Society. His paintings have received numerous awards in national watercolor competitions, including three awards from the American Watercolor Society.

Andrews has authored books including "Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor", "Interpreting the Landscape in Watercolor" and "Rough Sketches: Short Stories of a Traveling Artist", He has also created two DVD sets that follow his figure and landscape workshop curriculum. Another of his DVDs, "Making Watercolor Glow" is based on his original video. Don is featured in the Watson Guptill publication "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Watercolor" and the North Light book, "Confident Color". He has had numerous feature articles published in American Artist magazine and the Watercolor issue of American Artist.

A resident of Bastrop, Texas, Don has conducted painting workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe for over 30 years.

Participants will benefit from a more personal understanding of the painting possibilities available in the exciting world of figure painting. This workshop will be packed with demonstrations, discussions, individual help and personal and group critiques. A live model will be central to the workshop.

February 2, 2019 - Acrylic Exploration with Lance Green

Picture
LITTLETON, CO. The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County will host a February 2 workshop led by well-known Colorado artist Lance Green. Green will share his philosophy, knowledge and application of color and expressionism. This enables participants to embrace his process - resulting in an individual art piece from the heart.

Lance Green is a colorist and expressionist but more than that he is a storyteller, conjuring images that take the viewer beyond the mere skin and bone of the subject and into the soul that lies hidden beneath.

The workshop will be divided into several segments. To begin, Lance will spend approximately one hour demonstrating an entire painting. Next, students will warm up with a collaborative painting. Small groups of five or six will divide the painting into parts. One person will work on the painting for ten minutes, then pass it on to the next person in their group who will continue working on it. This segment will last about one hour. The paintings will be allowed to dry during a one-hour lunch break. The workshop will conclude with participants doing a painting based on a photo image of their choice.

Lance Green was born in Colorado and lived there until the age of ten. For several years he traveled about the Southwest with his mother and stepfather, living in the Colorado high country, the bayous of Lake Texarkana and the high deserts of New Mexico and Arizona where he was immersed in native art and culture.

As a teen, the family settled in east Los Angeles where he developed a love for Latin art and culture. While attending high school his art teacher, Linda Stevens, gave him the guidance that he needed to set his life course as an artist.

His work reflects the influence of the the late contemporary master Fritz Scholder with whom he did a series of one-on-one workshops in the late sixties. Others whose works contributed to his unique style include Nathan Oliviera, Manual Neri, and Mexican masters Laura Hernandez and Rufino Tamayo.

Lance now makes his home in Manitou Springs where he paints in his studio. His work is displayed in Copper Moon Gallery in Taos, New Mexico, Canyon Road Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Darpino Gallery in Manitou Springs, and Wilde Meyer Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Of her lifetime journey as an Artist, Victoria states, “Art is my passion and my joy!  I believe that we are here to live our purpose as defined by what we are passionate about, that which makes our heart sing.
This one-day workshop will encourage you to find inspiration from objects that are found in our everyday lives.  We will abstract those objects by use of exaggeration, altered color and simplification to find new ideas for 'semi-abstract' work.  Plan to bring several objects, i.e. vases, containers, fruit, boxes, etc., and/or photographs of such. Saturday November 3, 2018 Mixed Media Workshop with Amelia Furma

Picture
Amelia Furman’s multi-layered works showcase landscapes from around the world. With collage and paint she creates landscapes that invite viewers to access the deeper layers of collage. This workshop affords participants the unique opportunity to walk through each step of her process.

Furman grew up in rural, central Pennsylvania amidst pastoral scenes of farms, fields, and forests.  Nature has captured her attention for as long as she can remember.  Visual arts were also a dominant force in Furman’s life from an early age. After graduating with a degree in visual art from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2003, she began to explore how she could use paint to express her love of the natural world.

A background in printmaking and illustration has heavily influenced the direction of Amelia’s work.  She works in a combination of paper collage, text and thin layers of acrylic paint.  A selection of documents, vintage images, handwritten text, and symbols associated with the painted image reminds the viewer that places and objects have many layers of meaning, memory, and beauty.

Along with exhibiting her finished works, Amelia enjoys teaching adults and students in mixed media workshops throughout Colorado.  Using accessible techniques and language, she helps beginners learn the basics of mixed media art while also challenging advanced students with her unique style.

Furman displays her work throughout the United States in traditional and non-traditional venues. Residing in Loveland, CO with her husband and two sons, her works can be found in private collections nationwide.

Students are encouraged to bring their own collage materials, but Amelia will also have supplemental supplies from her own collection.  Students should also bring a reference photo of a simple landscape. They will then paint the landscape on top of the finished collage background.

Saturday September 1, 2018 Watercolor Techniques with Phyllis Vandehaar

Picture
LITTLETON, CO. The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County kicks off its 2018/19 season with a watercolor workshop by popular artist and teacher Phyllis Vandehaar.

Instead of holding a typical "paint along with the instructor" type of workshop, Phyllis will spend the day exploring a number of exciting watercolor techniques. Beginning with basics, the class will move toward more complex concepts.

As the workshop progresses, participants will begin creating "little paintings" - more of an example rather than completed larger works although, according to Vandehaar, some of the tiny pieces may well deserve mounting.

With a BA and MA in Fine Art from the University of Colorado, Phyllis spent most of her career as an art instructor at Arapahoe High School in Littleton. She is also a working artist in watercolor, mixed media, pastels, charcoal, and collage, preferring to extract subject matter and relate it abstractly through loosely applied color and brush work.

Her greatest sense of achievement is inventing subject matter using vibrant colors, creating unusual relationships and simply making things up as she goes along. There is often subtle tongue-in-cheek humor in her art, and she often leads her work into “impossible situations.”

“If art isn’t challenging, enlightening, enjoyable, and doesn’t require the thinking process, then there is something wrong” is Phyllis’s mantra.  In retirement she still teaches a few classes, some private lessons, and conducts demos and workshops around the Denver Metro area.

Art has always been an integral part of Phyllis. She says, “I don’t know what I would have done with my life had I not been an artist.”

March 3, 2018. Pastel Workshop with Chuck Ceraso

Picture
The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County presents a one-day workshop hosted by well-known Denver artist and teacher Chuck Ceraso.

After beginning his art education at the University of Notre Dame in the early 70’s, Chuck continued his studies with Henry Hensche, prominent artist, teacher, and color theorist of the 20th century. Chuck’s goal is to pass the knowledge that he acquired from Hensche on to his students. For many years he has shared this knowledge with artists at the Denver Art Museum, the Art Students League of Denver, the Arvada Center, and in his studio.

Chuck Ceraso’s work is in numerous public and private collections throughout the US and Europe.

This workshop features the still life, with a focus on the color relationships that best describe the form, light, and atmosphere as observed in the setup. Participants will be introduced to a way of using the eyes to facilitate a more accurate color sensation than one can get from simple direct vision.

For this workshop you should bring a good amount of pastels (no amount is too many!) Soft pastels like Unison and Terry Ludwick’s are best. February 3, 2018 -- Watercolor and Ink Workshop: Elegant Writer ®  with Phyllis Vandehaar

Picture

This workshop will be one where participants will do some drawing with a tool called Elegant Writer (by Speedball).  It is a high quality pen that contains fluid that, when subjected to water, "bleeds" into an array of fluid "values." These pens come in black and a few colors. For more information on Elegant Writer, go to http://www.heritage-guild.com/uploads/2/3/4/6/23464008/workshop_registration_form_2017-4.pdf

Saturday, December 2. Helen Shaffer and “Colored Pencil Pizzazz”

Picture
The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County presents “Colored Pencil Pizzazz”—a one-day workshop taught by Helen Shaffer. Helen is an award-winning artist who has participated in numerous local and regional art shows. She has studied at the Art Students League in Denver and served on the Board of Directors of the Canon City Fine Arts Association and the Board of Directors of the Colorado Watercolor Society.

She has worked in the creative process for over forty years in different media including oils and intaglio printmaking. One of her favorite painting mediums is casein, a rich paint that was used widely by the masters but not often used today. For drawing, Helen chooses a variety of media.

Helen’s iconography is described as eclectic but she consistently returns to images of the land with its ever changing challenges. When painting landscapes, the major endeavor is to try to be true to what first attracted her enough to want to do a painting, with the forms and colors as she sees them at a particular time.
A series might include highway overpasses, fading sunflowers and the chairs in her home sometimes incorporating the two images, or doorways in different locations, and roads that cut across landscapes.

Thursday and Friday, Nov. 9-10. Homare Ikeda Explores the Mystical Aspect of Painting

Picture
This two-day workshop will provide an eye-opening vehicle to the world of the visual unknown.

Homare Ikeda was born on the small subtropical island of Yoron, near Okinawa, Japan. He now lives and works in Denver, Colorado where he shares his vision of art as an instructor at the Art Students League.

"Painting has become a vehicle to travel in and out of the world of unknown. A blob of paints is daubed, scratched, scraped and painted one layer upon another. The thickly painted surface is reminiscent of my journey into the heart of the sea where all my reflections of life are imbued. The sea is the genesis of the original form of life”.

“I begin my painting with a simple vision. The first stages are usually kept fluid and open. As the painting progresses, I keep adding or scraping the layers of paint. I see them as the metaphor of life. At a certain point in this process, the painting starts to take control. The painting is transformed to the state of the unknown. There, I put down my paintbrush. My journey into the dream of sea begins again. Working with painting is mystical. I often don't know what I am doing yet painting seems to know how and what to do. I spend many hours looking at the painting as if it is able to say something. When things are right it does speak. I add one more stroke and wait for her voice to come out. It is a fascinating space."

Pre-registration is required for the workshop and artists aged 18 years and older may attend. A registration form is available at (http://heritage-guild.com/current-workshops.html). LITTLETON, CO—September 1, 2017—The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County will host an October 7 workshop emphasizing modern expressionism. Taught by Colorado artist Lance Green, the one-day session will enable participants to explore new avenues of color and self-expression.

Sept. 2 Workshop Features Artist Chuck Danford Teaching “Painting Techniques on YUPO®

Picture
Fascinating textural effects and brilliant color are hallmarks of watercolor on YUPO® sheets, as shown at left in Chuck Danford’s painting of old buildings in a wooded area. (Image used by permission.)

LITTLETON, CO—June 5, 2017—The Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County will host a September 2 workshop on “Painting Techniques on YUPO® Synthetic Paper.” Taught by Colorado artist Chuck Danford, the one-day session will enable participants to experiment with the unconventional characteristics of this support.

Originally developed for marketing and packaging applications, the non-porous, polypropylene substrate appeals to fine artists, who can create dramatic textural effects previously impossible to achieve on conventional watercolor papers. Paint can be dripped and manipulated on the smooth, bright white finish. Also, sections of a painting can be “lifted” or the entire image wiped clean and the sheet re-painted.

Chuck Danford (www.chuckdanford.com) is a Colorado native and graduate of the Colorado Institute of Art. Danford started his career as art director at a Denver television station and designer for the Denver Research Institute at the University of Denver. He cofounded Unit One, Inc., a graphic design studio, and began painting professionally in 1998. He is a signature member and past president of the Colorado Watercolor Society. Danford has been teaching design and watercolor for more than 15 years. His work can be found in many private and public collections and is currently exhibiting in local and regional shows.

Pre-registration is required for the workshop and artists aged 18 years and older may attend. Participants should bring a few scraps of textured materials, such plastic packaging wrap, stamps and stencils; a sturdy board; watercolor paints; white gouache; various brushes including a two-inch flat wash brush; YUPO® paper; and reference photos. A complete supply list is posted at http://www.heritage-guild.com/uploads/2/3/4/6/23464008/heritage_yupo_workshop_supply_list.pdf.

Phyllis Vandehaar Hosts "Playful Watercolor and Ink"
Workshop for Heritage Fine Arts Guild February 4

Picture
Local artist Phyllis Vandehaar, who created this water media painting of a bird on a branch, will teach Heritage workshop participants how to use watercolor and ink to unusual effect. (Image used by permission.)

LITTLETON, CO—Jan. 4, 2017—On Sat., Feb. 4, 2017, local artist Phyllis Vandehaar will lead a one-day workshop, “Be Playful with Watercolor and Ink,” for the Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County.

Participants will draw with a device called the Speedball® Elegant Writer® calligraphy marker, a high-quality pen containing ink that flows into a lovely array of fluid values when water or watercolor paints are applied. Vandehaar will demonstrate and show examples. Participants will start out with a small piece of paper to experience what the Elegant Writer® will do. Afterward, the class will use a larger format for more elaborate work.

A working artist in watercolor, mixed media, pastels, charcoal, and collage, Vandehaar earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine art from the University of Colorado. For many years, she served as a high school art teacher, primarily at Arapahoe High School in Littleton. Her mantra was always, "If art isn't challenging, enlightening, enjoyable and requiring the thinking process, there is something wrong!"  She prefers to abstract her subject matter using loosely applied color and brush work.

Pastel Artist Diane Edwards to Teach Pastels At December 3 Workshop

Picture
Pastel artist Diane Edwards, a Master Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, will lead a workshop for the Heritage Fine Arts Guild. Her painting, “Winter at the Pond” at left is an example of her approach to creating a snowy scene. (Image used by permission.)

LITTLETON, CO—Oct. 17, 2016—On December 3, the Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County will host a one-day workshop with Fort Collins pastel artist Diane Edwards. A Master Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, Edwards will lead participants as they learn to paint snow, water and reflections in winter scenes, paying particular attention to values, edges and color temperature. She will also teach methods for adding texture to the background of a painting.

Edwards is co-founder of Paint the Poudre Plein Air, a group of artists that paints scenes of the Cache La Poudre River outdoors. The Poudre is one of 208 federally designated National Wild and Scenic Rivers and the only such river in Colorado. She particularly likes to paint “the parts of the landscape that most people don’t notice at all” and work in pastel because the color sticks provide “immediate brilliance” for her artwork.

Edwards earned a Master’s degree in Art and Education from Adams State University in Alamosa, where her painting professor was nationally recognized watercolorist Stephen Quiller. She maintains a studio in Fort Collins and teaches at Aims Community College in Loveland. Edwards’ murals can be viewed at Medical Center of the Rockies, Kaiser Permanente clinics, as well as in local restaurants and hotels.

The workshop will be held December 3 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm (doors unlocked by 8:30 am) at First Presbyterian Church, 1609 W. Lance Green to Teach Expressionistic Painting
For Heritage Fine Arts Guild November 5 in Littleton

Picture
The acrylic painting "City Bear Light," shown at left, is typical of the expressionistic style that Lance Green will teach to guild participants. (Used by permission.)

LITTLETON, CO—Oct. 4, 2016—On November 5, the Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County will sponsor a one-day workshop on expressionism with Colorado contemporary artist Lance Green. Expressionism enables artists to bypass the limitations of objectivity and make it easier to express themselves.

Students will begin the day by examining expressionist paintings and applying an underpainting to canvas with random colors, shapes and strokes. Next students will observe colors, layers and revealed images, which they will then sketch with charcoal and proceed to paint. Finally, participants will work on color, shading and composition, taking advantage of the underpainted surface.

“Invariably students come away from the workshop with a certain sense of release, as well as enthusiasm for their work, and most come away with a sense of exhilaration,” Green says.

Green has lived in the high country of the Colorado Rockies, the Texarkana Bayou and the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. He majored in Fine Arts at Rio Hondo College in East Los Angeles and now paints in his home studio in Colorado. Green’s strongest mentor was Fritz Scholder (1937–2005), famous for his controversial, Pop-influenced portraits of Native Americans. “What attracted me to Fritz was the incredible strength in his work. It was the most striking work I’d ever seen,” Green says.

Green’s work is displayed at the Copper Moon Gallery in Taos, New Mexico; Wilde Meyer Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona; Darpino Gallery, Manitou Springs, Colorado; and The Loft Gallery in San Pedro, California.

The workshop will be held from 9:00 am-3:00 pm (doors unlocked by 8:30 am) at First Presbyterian Church, 1609 W. Littleton Blvd. in Littleton, at the northwest corner of Littleton Blvd. and Windermere Street. The one-day April 2 workshop, "Landscapes Bright and Bold," taught by Robert Gray, will focus on bold and intense transparent watercolors. Born in Denver, Robert is a Colorado artist who paints in several media.  “When I’m painting, no matter what the subject matter happens to be, my goal is to keep the work exciting–with lots of action, color, and loose style,” he says. Gray attended workshops by such noted artists as Charles Reid, Frank Francese, Eric Wiegardt, Don Andrews, Tony van Hasselt, and William Condit.  Gray owned a gallery in downtown Littleton from 1998 to 2003. His paintings can be found in various foreign countries and corporate collections. He has won several art show awards including Best of Show in Littleton’s 1999 Own an Original, Roxborough Arts Council’s 2012 Autumn in the Arts, and the Heritage Guild’s 2013 This is Colorado statewide juried exhibition.

The one-day April 16 workshop, “Abstract Painting Made Easy,” taught by Jennifer Bobola, will help artists develop abstract paintings from primary acrylic colors--yellow, blue, and red. Bobola will supply additional acrylic paint and white frames so participants can frame their painted images immediately if they choose to do so. The frames are $10 each for those interested in taking one home. Another project will involve rice paper and gel medium, which Bobola will provide. Bobola has played saxophone and painted since childhood. With a passion for both disciplines, she earned a double major in college. After college she studied further with Mark Nelson, Jeff Wenzel, and Kevin Weckbach. Since 2000 Bobola has shown her work at Abend Gallery Fine Arts in Denver and has exhibited at the Denver International Airport and the Denver Modernism Show in 2014.  Bobola had a solo show at Abend in July 2015.

The two-day May 20-21 “Abstracted Reality” workshop, presented by Victoria Kwasinski, will explore the creation of exciting paintings that reflect a feeling of a particular subject matter taken from reality and abstracted. Using the principles of abstraction (subtract and exaggerate), and pushing art principles and elements of color, shape and line, participants will create work that reflects their own unique artistic voices. Kwasinski will also discuss the importance of finding a signature style and how working within a series will help artists develop a cohesive body of work. Kwasinski attended Colorado Institute of Art and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, where she graduated as class valedictorian. She has more than 30 years of experience as a professional artist and has worked as a corporate graphic artist, freelance illustrator, gallery owner, fine artist and art instructor.
