Brian's drawing, cartooning and painting began in early childhood, and led to commissioned artwork in his college years. He began showing pen and ink and charcoal sketches, acrylic and oil portraits and western paintings in galleries and businesses in central and southern Colorado. As part of his artistic endeavors, he also became a political cartoonist, having a lot of fun lampooning then noted politicians: Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and others. His cartoons were published in regional periodicals and newspapers.
Actively engaged in Colorado's outdoor life, Brian is an accomplished mountain climber - having scaled 44 of Colorado's fourteen thousand foot peaks, and a number of the Washington and Oregon's higher peaks (Rainier, Hood, Adams).
It's no surprise that his love for the outdoors transfers into his primary artistic subjects of western art and landscapes, and more recently, seascapes and island themes. He and his family share a deep love and attachment to Maui and the Hawaiian islands. Scuba, snorkeling, and open ocean swimming are all activities of preference as Brian and his family have made a point of frequenting the islands annually, for many years. |
Brian enjoys rendering and realism, without sacrificing color and appeal. His primary medium of choice is oil on canvas.
Supply List:
- An ample supply and full compliment of ACRYLIC PAINTS including the primary and secondary colors, must haves: sky (cerulean) blue, white, yellow, red, orange, green, brown.
- CANVAS of choice, preferably at least 16”x 10” up to a 20”x 24” in size.
Use what you want, but this range is best for teaching - PAINT BRUSHES of choice, small medium and large, plus a plastic glass of water for the brushes, and paper towels.
- OPTIONAL, NOT REQUIRED, but great to have: an ample array of OIL PAINTS and ODORLESS PAINT THINNER. (Again, not required, but I will work with those who have oil paints).

We can find paper anywhere and we can also purchase paper to use in our collage artwork. Our preference to papers is very personal. This workshop will have us repurposing found papers and altering their surface. Creating a palette of papers to choose from and learning about color, texture, value, shapes, and other design elements. We may not even notice this aspect because we will be practicing the art of responding with our choices as we touch every part our palettes we created.
Each half day session will include a demo and time for everyone to work on their own collage palette. After our session time is over you will have the rest of the day to make more papers and coat them to be ready for the final day of assembling your collages with the Tack Iron method. Working with the acrylics glazing mediums in wonderful ways to added depth to your work. Student will end up with a 12 x 12 collage ready to mat and frame.
