Lance Green
"Exploring Modern Figurative Expressionism" -- October 7, 2017
Experiencing Lance Green; Colorist and Expressionist With a Palette of Zen
What better way to clear those October cobwebs than a walk outside to look at the leaves and absorb the fall colors. This is the way Lance Green began our figurative expressionism one day workshop. After sharing some of his personal story, we walked and gathered leaves in preparation for preparing our canvas underpainting using spray paint, wandering acrylic brushstrokes and even some leaves as stencils.

After a lunch break, Lance reminded us about life's progression of chaos and then order. He encouraged us to look within and confront issues that we needed to deal with and get rid of. Setting the perfect example he began a figure drawing of his lady Stacey who has been sidelined by a torn labrum and subsequent repair. He sketched her good leg dancing out at an angle and the bad, hurting leg pointing subdued and downwards. Just as we were sure he had the perfect portrait going he scrubbed over it with his brush accompanied by several audible gasps. He assured us that this was a great practice and generally something even better would emerge from the canvas. It did.
Lance's attention, suggestions and encouragement to the attending painters reaped magical benefits as could be seen in the last portion of the workshop where attendees were encouraged to share their work. A lot of impressive talent went on display, works of seasoned artists who were still willing to learn and those new to the scene who were willing to begin.
