Lance's style of painting is expressionism, which is a very free and uninhibited way of working with acrylic paints that doesn’t so much depend on skill and training as it offers a method of working that allows the student to bypass the limitations of objectivity and paint in a manner that makes it easier for him/her to express themselves.
The class started out by painting the canvas with 4 squares of color each representing the Native American notion of the phase of one's life:

Yellow for the first 20 years
Red for years 20-40
Blue for years 40-60
White for years 60 and beyond
Participants reflected on the various phases of their own lives and eventually evolved their 'self-portrait' over their life colors.
